Market Mover

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The coments below are ones I sent to a longtime friend in the investment business, who had asked my candid opinion about an imminent war against Iraq.

They're not elaborate or long, just a capsule of what I've expressed on recent radio broadcasts and in conversations with family and friends in recent months.

This is my honest feeling: we are intentionally telegraphing our punches to Iraq because the whole thing is the best head fake, bait and switch in military history.

While the world is waiting for us to bomb Iraq, suddenly because of 9/11 - for the first time - the U.S. finDs itself with substantive bases in Yemen, Qatar, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Khazakstan, Oman, etc. In short, we used to only have area bases in Saudi Arabia, which is why Tampa, Fla., had to be the home of the Central Command.

Now, with no more U.S.SR, we find that Islamic nations, including those former Soviet Bloc countries, have given us a launching pad. For other political reasons, we are limited in what we can do from air bases in Turkey. Powell & Co, know something they're not telling us.

Maybe we'll hit Iraq hard first. If so, good riddance.

But I suspect we have intelligence on a big al-Qaida cell or base in Syria, Iran, Azerbaijan, etc., and with 250,000 troops across the Iraqi border near Kuwait, we are suddenly going to have a devastating regional strike force against terror cells outside of Iraq.

Just my hunch... . cheers, Mark.
