WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2001 -- President George W. Bush at a nationally te= levised White House press conference this afternoon unexpectedly reiterated=

his support for the creation of a Palestinian state, an idea that is curre= ntly a major bone of contention between the U.S. and Israel and in part was= behind suggestions last week by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that t= he United States might be "selling out" Israel for advances against global = terrorism. The State Department has strongly condemned those remarks, reit= erating U.S. support for Israel.

"I believe there ought to be a Palestinian state, the boundaries ofwhich= ought to be negotiated by the parties ... so long as the Palestiniansaccep= t the right of Israel to exist," Bush said. "I will further the process if= I can do so," he said.

Bush said he is also pleased that Palestinian Authority President Yasse= r Arafat is "taking steps to control" extremist elements that have sponsore= d Israeli-Palestinian clashes in recent days.
