WHAT HAPPENS IF IRAN ATTACKS ISRAEL?
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Iran has promised to "rain down thousands of missiles on Israel" if the US attacks Syria. Today, an Iranian Revolutionary Guard reiterated that warning.
"The head of Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned Saturday that a US attack against Syria would have wider regional consequences," the latest news reports said.
"The U.S. opinion about its ability to limit a military intervention to Syria is nothing more than an illusion. The reactions will go beyond Syrian borders," Iran's Press TV quoted Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari as saying.
"I have decided that the United States should take military action against Syria," President Obama annoiced at a press conference today. But few have consiodered the possibility of an Iranian attack on Israel in response.
How could the five U.S. destroyers and an aircraft carrier (thankfully, one one of them is already in the Persian Gulf) leave the region and Israel defenseless except for their Iron Dome capacity?
For me, striking Iran in response would be perfectly acceptable, especially given the assurance of many US Presidents that we would defend Israel at all costs.
But how would that comport with the approval of Congress, if Obama wins it, to conduct only a limited strike? That is a difficult question to answer.
The simple answer is that as Commander-in-Chief, President Obama may take any action he desires short of declaring war without Congressional approval, which would be certain to support him unconditionally, I believe.
In short, then, any attack on Israel will meet a decisive response against Iran.
Their bases will be destroyed, their aircraft will be downed and their warships will be sunk. Iran will be very fortunate if it survives a US attack with any substantial capacity to respond.
